Potting Soil 101: How, Where, and
When to Use It

Potting mix is specially made for potted plants—it’s lighter, drains better, and often contains added nutrients. Garden soil is heavier and better suited for outdoor beds.

Choosing the right soil depends on your plant’s needs:

  • Indoor plants: Use a lightweight, well-draining potting mix to prevent water from sitting around the roots.
  • Succulents and cacti: Choose a fast-draining, gritty mix with sand or perlite to avoid root rot.
  • Orchids and aroids: They prefer chunky, airy mixes that allow lots of airflow to the roots.
  • Vegetables and herbs: Look for nutrient-rich organic potting soil or mixes with added compost to support healthy growth.
  • Seed starting: Use a fine, lightweight seed starting mix that helps seeds germinate easily without compacting.

Indoor plants grow best in a lightweight, well-draining potting mix. It should hold some moisture without becoming soggy and allow air to reach the roots.

Look for potting mixes made with ingredients like peat moss, coconut coir, perlite, or vermiculite to support healthy root growth and prevent overwatering problems.

Yes, you can reuse old potting mix, but it’s best to refresh it first. Remove any old roots, mix in fresh compost, and add new potting mix if needed to restore nutrients and improve drainage.

If the old soil shows signs of pests, mold, or diseases, it’s safer to discard it and start fresh to protect your plants.

It’s a good idea to refresh or change the soil in your potted plants every 12 to 18 months.
Over time, soil can lose nutrients, become compacted, and drain poorly, which can affect your plant’s health. For fast-growing plants or heavy feeders like vegetables, you might need to replace the soil more often.

If you notice slow growth, yellowing leaves, or water sitting on top of the soil, it could be a sign that it’s time for a soil change.
