Papaya tree oozing milky sap

What is the issue with this papaya tree?

While some sap oozing can be caused by physical injury or insects, the most frequent internal causes are related to nutritional imbalances and soil depletion.

If your papaya fruits are showing white sap leakage and forming a bumpy, deformed shape as they grow, this often points to a nutrient deficiency affecting their structural development and sugar distribution.

Understanding boron deficiency in papaya

The primary culprit behind milky sap and deformed fruit is a lack of the micronutrient Boron. Boron is vital for the development of cell walls and the transport of sugars during the fruiting stage.

Symptoms of boron deficiency in fruit

When papaya plants lack boron, the initial symptom is often the appearance of milky sap on the fruit’s surface. As the fruit develops, it may become severely deformed, with an uneven, bumpy surface and significantly reduced eating quality. Because boron is crucial for flower and fruit development, its deficiency prevents the fruit from ripening properly, often leading to a woody or tasteless harvest.

The borax treatment and dilution guide

To solve this, you must supplement the soil with a borax solution. Dissolve 10g of borax in a small amount of hot water (as it dissolves poorly in cold water), then dilute the solution 500 times with room temperature water. Apply this mixture directly to the soil around the root zone to help the plant absorb the necessary boron and improve future fruit quality.

Addressing insufficient soil minerals

In many cases, boron deficiency is a sign that the soil is inherently depleted of essential minerals and organic matter. Improving the overall “immune system” of the soil is the best long-term prevention strategy.

Restoring soil health with Baba Compost-based Fertilizer

Proper application for maximum mineral uptake

Do not just leave the fertilizer on the surface. Incorporate it into the topsoil around the base of the tree and water it thoroughly. This allows the minerals to leach down into the root system effectively, ensuring that the plant has the structural support it needs to stop oozing sap and start producing smooth, healthy fruits.
