Fruits pods without fruits

Why are there many pods but not many successful fruits?

When the plant lacks essential minerals, flowers may form but fail to develop into healthy fruits, resulting in poor yield.

3 main causes of poor fruit set

Before fruiting improves, it is important to look at what may be interrupting the plant during its flowering stage. Most fruit set problems begin when the plant cannot fully support, protect, or complete the early fruit formation process.

1. Insufficient soil nutrients

Plants need adequate nutrients—especially phosphorus and potassium—to support flower development and fruit formation. Without these, flowers may drop or pods may fail to develop fully.

2. Pest Presence (Ants, Aphids, Scale Insects)

If you notice many ants on your plant, it usually indicates the presence of pests like aphids or scale insects. These pests secrete honeydew, which attracts ants and disrupts normal plant processes, affecting flower quality and fruit set.

3. Poor Pollination

Even with many flowers, fruit will not form if pollination is insufficient. This can happen due to lack of pollinators or environmental conditions.

Having many pods but poor fruit development is usually due to nutrient imbalance, pests, or pollination issues. With proper fertilization, pest control, and care, you can significantly improve fruit set and yield.

How to improve fruit set successfully

Control pests and support pollination

Inspect the plant regularly, especially under leaves and around flowers. If pests such as aphids or scale insects are present, treat them promptly to prevent interference with plant development.

For a better fruit set, you can also assist pollination manually by using a cotton swab to transfer pollen between flowers, especially if natural pollination is low.

Maintain proper watering

Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Both overwatering and underwatering can stress the plant and affect fruit formation.

How to know if it’s working

You will notice improvement when:

  • More flowers develop into fruits
  • Pods grow larger and healthier
  • Overall plant vigor increases

Help more pods turn into healthy fruits

Poor fruiting can be improved when the plant gets better soil nutrition, timely pest control, steady watering, and enough pollination support.
